Off Piste Snowboarder Caught in Avalanche near Chamonix
28 Year Old Swedish Man Dies in Hospital
A snowboarder has died following an avalanche on Tuesday afternoon on the Swiss side of the Balme/Vallorcine area. The 28 year old Swedish man was riding in Les Jeurs sector of the Domaine de Balme (Le Tour & Vallorcine) when the incident occurred.
Rescue services were able to locate the man under 1.8m of snow thanks to his avalanche transceiver but he was found to be in cardiac arrest. The Swede was then evacuated by helicopter to hospital in Sion where he sadly died on Wednesday.
Recent heavy snowfall in Chamonix combined with significant winds meant that Monday's avalanche risk was rated as 4/5 (high) over 2,300m and 3/5 (considerable) under 2,300m.
