Casa Valerio - Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria, Chamonix Centre
Famous amongst the Chamonix locals, Casa Valerio, never fails to impress every time you eat there. This is the most authentic of Italians, run by Fanny and Valerio, the restaurant supplies all sorts of mouth watering dishes to get stuck into!

Casa Valerio creates the fantastic atmosphere expected in great Italian restaurants. The aromas of the excellent food surrounded with the ambiance of people enjoying their food and company makes this one of the best restaurants in Chamonix.
To start I chose the “Carpaccio Di Manzo Marinato, Parmigiano Regina” (13€). This generous portion of carpaccio of beef is one of the best I have tasted. Combined with the bed of rocket, crumbling Parmesan slices and an olive oil dressing this dish could be eaten over and over again! (And in fact is by me!). My partner chose the “Mozzarella In Carrozza Alla Buffalo Con Rucola”(11€). This is buffalo mozzarella lightly fried in olive oil served with toast served on a bed of rocket. We had not seen this style of starter before and lived up to all expectations. The cheese was not at all greasy and the light salad complemented the mozzarella.
Being in the best Italian in Chamonix we could only go for the classic pasta/pizza combination for main course however “Casa”, as it's commonly known does offer a selection of fresh fish and meat dishes all of course in the Italian style.
Our main courses were: “Spaghetti Ai gamberoni” (14€) and “Calabrese pizza (11€)with added spinach and Gorgonzola cheese” (3€).
The spaghetti was a generous portion of al dente spaghetti served in a tomato and garlic sauce with 5 enormous king prawns. The prawns were delicious and the chef had done my partner the favour of de shelling them! The flavours were excellent and the delicious tomato and garlic sauce left me scraping the plate at the end.
Casa Valerio has won awards for it's pizzas. They are cooked in the wood burning oven situated in the dining area of the restaurant. The thin base and excellent ingredients make Casa's pizza some of the best in the Chamonix valley. The calabrese pizza is a pizza with home made tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese with spicy salami and I added extra toppings of spinach and gorgonzola! The menu boasts over 50 pizzas including the white pizzas with no tomato sauce!
For dessert we decided to share “Tartufone Al Cioccolato Fondente” 7€. This was an incredible dish. The moist chocolate sponge was warm and the centre was filled with liquid chocolate. This was served with vanilla ice cream and made for an excellent finish to a fine Italian dinner.
Situated on Rue de Lyret, Casa Valerio is just a short walk from the centre square. open from 12 noon till 2 a.m. Casa is a great place for a glass of wine and some grissini bread sticks before or after dinner!!
This year (2007) Casa Valerio has just been awarded the highest possible accolade from an independent assessor. Their Pizza Margherita Napoletana Extra STG has been approved by an Italian company Isoquality Group showing it to be made from the finest ingredients and prepared in a kitchen of haute standing! - and that's from an Italian assessor!! Not bad in our book! This is the first such award to be made in France and only the 3rd to be made worldwide!
