Attention to detail is the name of the game here. This goes for the food itself, of course – from the dainty amuse bouche through to the miniature meringues served with coffee – but this is also carried through into the décor. The 'Eden' theme is reflected in the apples that pop up throughout, from the weightly table decorations, through the woven wicker apples on the walls, to the tiny, glitter-encrusted ones lined up along the ledge of the fireplace.
A wonderful combination of contemporary and classic French cuisine, from Swedish chef Frederick Darenius, has earned acclaim from numerous gourmet restaurant guides including France's famous 'Guide Michelin'.
You can dine a la carte or choose from three fixed price menus – 27, 37 and 47 €uros. Expect to pay from around 40 or 50 euros a head with wine. We had Honey-glazed Goats’ cheese with salad and red onions to start. A generous hunk of cheese – crisp and sweet on the outside, warm and soft inside – on a neat bed of salad with beetroot leaves and crunchy radishes. Other starters include Noix de Saint-Jacques with Aruga caviar (this is your starter for the 37 euro menu), and Pan-fried Foie gras with hazelnuts and fresh figs.
Everything looked so good, it took us an especially long time to decide on a main course, and as a fish-eating mostly vegetarian there were some exciting possiblities too (check out the peppered strawberries with brie and avocado). Pan-fired breast of duck with raspberry vinegar sauce and wild mushrooms proved popular (22€), as did the fabulous Seafood Pot au Feu, with tomato and fresh dill bouillon (21€). If you think you can manage 4 courses, make room for the cheese because there is an excellent selection of local and other French cheeses (8€).
Finally, the desserts are a real treat. Several come liberally decorated with fresh berries so you can at least claim you are getting some vitamins whilst indulging yourself so blatantly. The Cèpe Glacée (9€, and the dessert on the 27€ fixed menu) is definitely our favourite and the name had us scratching our heads as to what it might be – it is quite surprising when it arrives.
The Hotel Eden restaurant is open for dinner every evening apart from Tuesdays and it is always advisable to book. Children are very welcome and there’s even a special fixed price menu just for them. The service is top notch – a calm and excellent French Maître d’Hotel, Philippe Bruguet, is on hand to advise you (all the staff speak English by the way). We like the Hotel Eden so much we’ve been back twice in as many weeks and will definitely be going back before the season’s out. It’s the kind of place you are just looking for the slenderest of excuses to go back to. Depending on your bank balance, it may not be the place for a routine night out, but having said that the food is excellent value given the standard (you can eat quite indifferently in Chamonix for only slightly less). As exiled Londoners we were amazed to get such good food for what, on our last visit, amounted to around only £30 a headhe web:
