Videos from Chamonix - Cross-country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is one of those sports that I have always been wary of. Not only does it look like very hard work but you also have to wear lycra and that is a material that should only be worn by super heroes and cyclists. But when the weather was too cloudy to go riding AND there was a free Nordic ski test day taking place I took it as a sign from the gods that “ski de fond” was a sport that I should at least try.
Ravanel & Co. were the hosts of the annual “Nordic Monster Test” and skis and boots were available free of charge. So, dressed in my usual ski pants I clipped in and went for a slide.
Whilst this video is from the Ski Joering Championships held in Les Arcs each year, the activity is becoming more and more popular throughout the Alps and you can now try ski joering yourself in the Chamonix Valley.
Ski Joering hails from Scandinavia and can be practiced with the skier being pulled by either dogs or horses. The original drag lift, the sport survives today in either touring or competition form and if you want an après ski activity or a day out on the hill away from the crowds then this is a sport worth checking out.

Family pass times like golf, tennis and walking are as easy to come by as thrill seeking activities like mountaineering, rock climbing, paragliding and rafting.
Some of France’s most popular tourist attractions are in Chamonix along with some of Europe’s most incredible views.
Chamonix is most certainly not just a winter destination!!

The Chamonix golf course lies just outside the centre of town in the village of Les Praz. A full eighteen hole course with club house restaurant, driving range and pro shop on site it is surrounded by some of the highest peaks in Europe and some of the most staggering views of any golf course in the world. Flying like a bird. It’s one of those things that almost everyone has wished for but unless you were born in a nest it is unlikely that you will ever beat gravity. Unless, you go paragliding! The views of the Chamonix Valley are even more beautiful from the air and with a number of reputable paragliding schools in Chamonix you could be soaring above the peaks tomorrow. Paragliding is open to all ages and you don't need to be physically fit to fly. A few short steps at take-off and landing and the rest is simply sitting in the harness and enjoying the ride. Take a look at some of the watersports available in the Chamonix Valley; hydrospeed, white water rafting and canyoning. The River Arve runs right through town and turns into a torrent during spring and early summer with all the meltwater that flows into it. Donning a wetsuit and taking the plunge is just one of the many summer activities that Chamonix has to offer.
