Situated in the Haute-Savoie region of France, Chamonix is bordered by Switzerland and Italy and dominated by the incredible Aiguilles de Chamonix mountain chain which peaks at the top of Mont Blanc (4810m) - the highest in Western Europe. Whilst the principal town is of the same name, 'Chamonix' is often used in reference to the whole valley, stretching over 28km from Le Fayet to Switzerland. It is, however, made up of several distinct and charming villages including Servoz, Les Houches, Les Bossons, Les Praz, Les Tines, Argentiere, Montroc, and at the top of the valley, Le Tour. As such, there are six separate lift systems in the valley, each offering a wide variety of activities.
To help you get your bearings, in this section you will find area maps showing you the layout of the land, detailed street maps, activity area maps, and lift & piste maps for the whole valley.
Activity Maps for Chamonix Valley
There are loads of activities going on in the valley, each with their own dedicated brochures etc. These are the ones we have been able to get our hands on for you...
Getting around the valley and resort you may find the following maps and timetables for buses and trains useful. Shared transport is the way forwards for the planet, and with the centre of Chamonix being pedestrian or busy, your own car is often slower. Valley-long transportation options consist of the main buses and the train, with in-town hop-on, hop-off free bus service which are low pollution models. And to be really carbon friendly - walk!
There are several piste maps available for the Chamonix region, depending on which source you want to use. Online there is the main interactive map from the Compagnie du Mont Blanc which shows the opening status of the lifts and pistes.
Paper piste maps are available from the lift-stations, Tourist Office, hotel receptions and the like...
These are the available maps for the roads and streets in the valley from Les Houches to Argentiere (except there isn't a map of Argentiere as no-one local has done one yet... still you'd be hard pushed to get lost there!!)
