Reports have come in of a Dutch climber who has fallen to his death on Pointe Gugliermina on the Italian south face of Mont Blanc

The 56 year old climber was climbing on Pointe Gugliermina located on the iconic Peuteray Intergrale. The Peuteray Intergrale is the longest ridge in the Alps and a serious undertaking for any mountaineer, taking two or more days to climb.

It is suspected that the climber fell as a result of a hold coming free which led to a fall of more than 10 metres. Despite his efforts, his American partner could not stop the fall.

Although he was wearing a helmet, unfortunately it was not enough to protect him from the impact and he suffered severe trauma to the head.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
