The final installment of illustrated talks this summer

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

This Friday sees the last of the illustrated talks in English as a part of Chamonix's Golden Age of Alpinism celebrations.

The guest speaker on Friday will be Clare Roche, Phd candidate at Birkbeck, London University, who will be talking about the fascinating subject of Women Climbers in the 19th century.

Discover how they shed the shackles of convention and made their way in a male chauvinistic society. Learn more about Isabella Straton, the English heiress who was the first to climb Mont Blanc in winter and who subsequently fell in love and married her Chamonix guide. Lucy Walker, the first woman on the Matterhorn who drank champagne on every climb to combat altitude sickness. Meta Brevoort, the American rival. Katherine Richardson, Lily Bristow (Mummery’s climbing partner) and many other remarkable women.

The talk is Friday 6.30pm at the Salle du Bicentenaire (next to the Musée Alpin) alongside the river.

Please come along and support Clare who is coming over especially to talk to you all. Admission free.
