Montenvers Gondola to be Re-Positioned in a EUR15.5m Investment in the Site

New gondola, glacier & climate exhibition & no more steps to the Mer de Glace?

Good news for anyone visiting the Mer de Glace in the not too distant future, as the site is having around 15.5 million euros invested in it.

Part of the funding (€5.5m) is coming from the Haute-Savoie committee and the rest of the bill we assume is being footed by the Compagnie du Mont Blanc who operate the site.

Local newspaper Le Dauphine say that visitor numbers to the Mer de Glace have seen a decline and that this investment is hoped to counteract the fall.

The investment will see the current gondola and the 400 or so steps leading down to the ice cave re-positioned, making the glacier more accessible to all visitors. There will also be a large new glacier and climate exhibit installed on the large terrace overlooking the glacier.

There is no news yet as to when the work will start, but we'll keep you posted.
