Revisions to the Chamonix Avalanche PPR

Public enquiry & consultation to take place from 16th Feb to 24th March

The most recent Avalanche PPR (Les Plans de Prevention des Risques) was created in 2010, amended slightly in June 2014, and has now been challenged by the AIRAP Association (Association pour l'Information sur les Risques d'Avalanches urbaines et leur Prevention).

Chamonix Council has requested amendments to the current Risk Prevention Plan after the State representative in the Department of Haute Savoie commissioned 4 International experts to study the avalanche risk in the Chamonix Valley and present their findings. The result of their study has meant the revision of 27 avalanche paths.

The municipality wishes to make it clear that the outcome of the study and any anticipated amendments would not have any effect of future urbanisation plans and town planning already in affect. However the public has been called upon to consult on the matter and a public enquiry will be held over the coming month.

Mayor, Eric Fournier, says that the PPR is hard to set up because there is no "directions for use" and that it is sometimes hard to apply it for existing buildings. Some houses and villages are very old, more than 100 years, and applying the PPR would "deface" these old buildings/villages. Hence why they are calling for public involvement in the decisions.

There will be 24 'open-house' style consultations where you can drop-in and discuss matters further with the 3 investigative commissioners. Dates and times are as follows:
