by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 9th May, 2012That time of year has rolled around once more... the final closing party at Les Grands Montets. It is the last of the Chamonix ski areas to close and is therefore the official end to the winter season, and what a winter it was! ...more

by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 2nd May, 2012Of all the exciting things that happened in Chamonix this week, the most exciting by far was the almighty storm that nearly blew us all to Kansas and resulted in a complete black out. ...more
Getting funky, eating pancakes & partying : 25th April 2012Late nights out & early powder days - best of both worlds in Chamonix
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 25th Apr, 2012Spring? Summer? Winter? Chamonix is playing its usual trick of giving us it all in one day at the moment. On more than one occasion this week we've had fresh snow falling all the way down into town. We've also had a fair bit of torrential rain, and in between we've had bright sunshine, moody clouds, bluebird afternoons and complete white-outs. At least one thing is consistent... the fancy dress parties are still going strong. ...more
Fresh snow is putting the “ski” back into “apres-ski” : 18th April 2012Winter has returned to give the season a new lease of life before it's time to say au revoir
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 18th Apr, 2012Was it really only a fortnight ago that we were strolling around town in flip-flops and sipping chilled rosé in the afternoon sun? Yep, and now it's winter again! Snow has returned to Chamonix, just to give us a final blast up the mountain and remind us of what a great season it has been. ...more
Fancy dress-tastic & final Chambre 9 apres : 11th April 2012End of season madness causes mass outbreak of partying
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 11th Apr, 2012There's something about this time of year that makes people start panic-partying, as though a sudden halt to the good times is looming on the horizon. I can assure you it's not, Chamonix is officially the town that never stops partying. But don't tell anyone else that, as I'm making the most of all the frenzied end-of-season fun. ...more
Easter holidays & more snow! : 4th April 2012Snow returns to Chamonix just in time for Easter weekend
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 4th Apr, 2012The continuous sunny weather may not be great for the snow but it's certainly been good for the partying, whether it's soaking up the sun on a mountain terrace or chilling out at a lakeside BBQ – either way, it's not a bad life out here! ...more
Spring sun & Winter Sessions Weekender : 28th March 2012Lazing around in the sun and gearing up for the party of the season
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 28th Mar, 2012It's been ridiculously warm and sunny in Chamonix this week, I've even seen lizards in the hedges and butterflies flying over the pistes. The snow is holding up well but the temptation to start early and finish early is too great when summer is in the air, especially now that the changing of the clock has given us an extra hour of sunshine. ...more

by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 8th Mar, 2012With so many good restaurants to choose from it's a good job that Chamonix is such a sporty town, otherwise we would be at the top of the obesity charts alongside Birmingham and Glasgow. ...more

Family fun & live music : 15th February 2012Best DJs & live music and how to keep the kids entertained
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 15th Feb, 2012Mid-February means one thing in Chamonix... BUSY!!! All of a sudden the population has exploded; streets are bustling, pistes are swarming, bars are booming – some full-time residents have been known to grumble about it but I love it. As long as you don't need to get anywhere in a hurry you can just enjoy the buzz that is in the air. It feels like being on holiday but with the advantage of being on home turf and knowing where to go and what to do. ...more
Kandahar & Cocktails : 8th February 2012World Cup Skiing & a plethora of parties
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 8th Feb, 2012It's all anyone's been talking about this week but maybe that's because we're British... it's been absolutely Baltic here in Chamonix with the thermometer dropping below -20c on occasion. This was never more apparent than on Saturday when we headed to Les Houches to watch the Kandahar. ...more
Kandahar weekend : 1st February 2012Get your cowbells ready for the Kandahar World Cup
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 1st Feb, 2012It's has been snowing steadily here in Chamonix for most of the week and today shows signs that clear skies are returning our way; however temperatures are set to drop to minus twenty this weekend so curling up in the pub with a hot drink after a very cold day on the mountain is looking likely! ...more
Falling over, fondue & fun : 25th January 2012Snow-skating and where to eat on the cheap in Chamonix
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 25th Jan, 2012This week saw me trying out yet another way to hurt myself... snow skating. A snow skate is basically a skateboard mounted on a short ski, which you slide down the mountain on until you fall over, which happens a lot. It was surprisingly un-painful though as you are not attached to the snowskate, so you can jump off if you feel yourself losing control and you tend to tumble rather than slam into the ground as you do with snowboarding. ...more
New places & old favourites : 18th January 2012Getting out of our comfort zone on & off the hill
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 18th Jan, 2012It has been a bit quiet in Chamonix this week, but that doesn't mean there's no fun to be had. There is always a bit of a lull in between Christmas/New Year and the February holidays but Chamonix is the town that never sleeps. ...more

New Year's Eve in Chamonix : 28th December 2011Where to celebrate the start of 2012
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 28th Dec, 2011It's that time of year again when the festivities of Christmas are no more than a fuzzy memory and the anticipation of New Year's Eve is looming on the horizon. ...more
Christmas in a winter wonderland : 21st December 2011Celebrate Christmas in snowy Chamonix!
by Alison Shayler | Ski Editor | published: 21st Dec, 2011This week I have mostly been drinking... vin chaud. I can't help myself when there is snow in the air; the desire to gaze into the flames of a crackling log fire, cradling a spicy mulled wine and wearing a "Christmas jumper" is just too much to resist. Now, I may be biased (it being my local and all) but, in my opinion, the only place to do this properly is in the Vagabond. A short stroll from the centre of Chamonix, in the direction of Les Gaillands, it is one of the oldest buildings in Chamonix and one of the very few bars with a proper fireplace. Throw in the fact that the drinks are priced at the more favourable end of the scale and you have a number of very good reasons to give it a whirl. ...more
