Three Americans and one English skier had descended the Glacier Rond yesterday afternoon but attempted a dangerous route that brought them out onto the section of the Bossons glacier where an avalanche tragically claimed the life of a local skier on Sunday. With their route blocked by rocks and avalanche debris, the group called the PGHM mountain rescue police.

Throughout the course of the night three rescue parties set out but could not find the group; the search was called off at 4am and they were forced to spend a cold, uncomfortable night under the stars.

A helicopter was sent up today once the weather had cleared and the group was rescued at 17:15 this afternoon - cold and tired but fortunately unharmed by their adventure.

The temperature in Chamonix is set to plummet this weekend with potential lows of -25c. Be sure to check the weather forecast and to take the advice of the Office Haute Montagne before heading off-piste.
