Bizes Restaurant Review

Cosy little bistro with great homecooked cuisine

The newest restaurant on the Chamonix scene is the charming Bizes (French slang for kisses), tucked away in a quiet corner in the town centre.

Their unique selling point is the “Josper” oven, an enclosed BBQ that seals in the juiciness and flavour of whatever meats and veggies are roasted in it, whilst cutting down the need to use extra fats or oils for cooking.

Of our merry group of five, we included one vegan and one gluten-free diner, so we were a bit concerned that the menu wouldn’t offer many options. We checked with our server though on being seated and were reassured that it would be fine and that the menu could be adapted to suit our needs.

While pondering the menu we munched on home baked bread, still warm from the oven and studded with little chunks of garlic that infused the bread with a sweet roasted flavour - delicious with the sun dried tomato dipping sauce that it came with.

The plat du jour seemed like a good deal at 14.90€ so most of us went for that - green salad followed by pork in a calvados sauce, finished off with rhubarb crumble. There were also a small but interesting selection of other dishes to choose from such as octopus salad, bouillabaisse and entrecote. The staff were helpful, friendly and happy to advise us on the menu - even bringing tasters of octopus out of the kitchen for us to try!

Our vegan was well looked after with a massive salad of BBQ grilled vegetables that included lovely smoky asparagus, tangy slivers of pink grapefruit and sweet crunchy pomegranate seeds - very flavoursome and a great combination.

The plat du jour dishes were all beautifully presented and, again, very generously portioned with thick slabs of pork covered in a rich creamy calvados sauce and accompanied with crispy roasted potatoes. The duck also looked delicious, served with a tangy citrus salad and plenty of vegetables.

After such a feast only three of our table were able to cope with dessert but from the look of them I would say that they are definitely worth leaving room for! The rhubarb crumble was not the sloppy pile of sugary fruit that it can sometimes be, but a slice of sweet stewed rhubarb topped with a thick crust of crunchy crumbly topping, steaming hot and served with a ball of vanilla ice cream and a red fruit coulis.

The interior of the restaurant is cosy and charming with lovely prints on the walls, funky light fittings and a wonderful big window at one end that looks out over the river. They also have a small terrace outside that I predict is going to be very popular on sunny days.

Lunch for 5 of us including a large bottle of water and a few soft drinks and coffees came to 95€; we found that the set menu was extremely good value and offered much more interesting options than many other restaurants in Chamonix. The à la carte options were significantly more expensive, but you kind of expect that, and if they’re anything as good as what we had then they’re probably worth it.

Bizes is open daily for lunch from midday to 3pm and for dinner from 7pm onwards.
