Spring has sprung with snowflakes : 11th April 2012

Spring has sprung but with snowflakes not snowdrops here in Chamonix.
With reported snow depths this morning of 5cm in Les Houches, 13cm in Flegere, 20cm in Brevent, 15cm at Tour and 25cm on the top of Grands Montets - the winter season has not finished yet!

The Chamonix forecast is for more snow throughout the day and into tomorrow.

Welcome return of snow : 19th March 2012

After several weeks of unseasonally warm weather and spring conditions on the mountain, winter has returned! Great news for anyone heading out this week.

It started snowing yesterday afternoon with a good 10cm falling in parts of the Chamonix Valley. This morning big flakes are coming down - with the freezing level predicted to be as low as 800m. The place to head until the skies clear up is Les Houches where visibility is always better.

This top up is very welcome indeed. There is certainly no shortage of snow up the mountain given the record amounts that fell earlier in the season. The sunshine and warm temperatures just meant the pistes weren't at their best in the afternoons.

The forecast is for mixed weather and the possibility of a little more snow tomorrow, followed by clearer skies and sunshine on Wednesday.

Winter returns : 5th March 2012

After another gloriously sunny weekend, we woke up to snow this morning in the Chamonix Valley. Hard to believe when you were sunning yourself on your balcony just the day before! About 5cm fell overnight with another 5-10cm due at 1000m over the course of the day (snow/ rain level is predicted to be around 500m). The forecast is for a little more snow overnight, petering out by morning.

Not, then, a dump alert of the proportions we saw on a regular basis earlier in the season. However, the new snow will be very welcome. The warm weather over the last couple of weeks meant conditions were very spring like – hard in the morning and slushy by the afternoon. This fresh snow, and the return of cooler temperatures, should improve conditions no end.

It's snowing in the Chamonix Valley! : 15th February 2012

The Siberian cold snap has finally come to an end. Temperatures rose yesterday and this morning the snow started. The snowflakes were tiny, initially. As the afternoon progresses they are getting bigger and falling more heavily.

The snow/ rain level is around 500m and, according to local weather reports, we are expecting 10-15cm at 1500m over the course of the day, with a further 5-10cm overnight. With the phenomenal snowfall in December and January we had got used to fresh powder. Thankfully, we now have some more!

It's snowing AGAIN! : 31st January 2012

We woke up this morning to yet more snow! Around 15cm has fallen outside our office (we're at 800m here in Servoz) and it is snowing right down to the valley.

The snow is predicted to continue this morning, petering out this afternoon. Snow rain limit is below 500m.

From tomorrow temperatures are set to plummet as a cold front from Siberia moves in. On Saturday the low is due to be -21°C with a high of just -12°C. So, make sure you wrap up warm when you head out to enjoy that powder!

It’s snowing in Chamonix! : 20th January 2012

We had huge amounts of snow in the first few weeks of the season, followed by wall to wall sunshine for just over a week. This gave us the chance to take advantage of the fabulous conditions and the seriously cold temperatures ensured everything stayed in peak condition.

And now, the snow is back again to top up those powder levels! Local weather reports predict 20 to 40 cm will have fallen today with a further 30-50cm anticipated at 1800m over night. Organisers of the Freeride World Tour have even postponed Saturday's event, based on the forecast.

First Dump Alert of 2012 : 5th January 2012Up to 50cm set to fall today!

It is SNOWING again! Their was a light covering of fresh snow first thing this morning. As the day progresses it is steadily getting heavier and now it is positively bucketing down! Today's local weather forecast predicts 25 - 50cm will have fallen at 1500m by the end of the day.

The snow is set to continue through the night (giving a further 5-20cm at 1000m), tailing off tomorrow morning. Just in time for the weekend!

Last dump of the year : 30th December 2011It's a big one!

After a small dusting of snow yesterday morning, we woke up today to see our familiar pizza-sized snowflakes back in town.

Some 20 cm has fallen overnight on the valley floor and more would have fallen up top - so much so, some lifts will be shut for the day (please check our live lift status).

A further 30-60 cm is forecast to fall down to resort level at 1000m and on Saturday the expected snowfall at 2000m is between a whooping 50 and a staggering 70 cm.
To top it off we are due some sunshine on Sunday... how’s that for the first day of the year!

Up to a metre of snow up top : 15th December 2011And still falling...

We woke up to big snow flakes in Chamonix this morning. And our snow reporter, who was on her way up the Grands Montets, has just called to say it is closed until midday due to current conditions! They are saying up to 1m of snow has fallen up top.

The good news is it is still snowing, with more expected overnight/ tomorrow. Great news for that all important base layer. Good timing too; just before the opening of the other pistes in the Chamonix area.

Snowing in Chamonix : 12th December 2011With more snow forecast for later in the week

Great news! The snow forecast for early this week has materialised. Which means more powder to boost that all important base layer.

Earlier this morning it was snowing up top and raining in town. As the day has gone on the rain/ snow limit has dropped and it is now snowing steadily, even in the centre of Chamonix. According to the local forecast between 15 and 25 cm are expected at an altitude of 1500m.

More snow and possible high winds are predicted for later in the week, good news for the opening of the other Chamonix ski areas this coming Saturday.

First dump of the 2011-2012 season : 5th December 2011Finally, it snows!

At last! We've had our fingers crossed all weekend and, finally, we have woken up to snow covered pistes (we suspect it is around 10cm higher up). And the good news is, this morning it is still raining in town which means it'll be snowing up top. The storm up top is even obscuring the webcams, which is always a good sign. This may not technically constitute a 'dump' as it is only a few centimentres, however, it is the first proper fall of the season and we are all extremely excited (and relieved!). What's more, the forecast for the next 24 - 48 hours is for cooler temperatures and more snow. Time to start doing those lunges!
