This evening marks the first of the special Montenvers “soirées” organised by the Compagnie du Mont Blanc to celebrate 100 years of the little red Montenvers train.
Every week, during the summer season, you’ll be able to take a nostalgic trip on the Montenvers railway line, to relive the journey as it was the day the line opened in 1908. A number of the original carriages have been beautifully restored and rolled out for the occasion, ready to whisk you back in time to the Mer de Glace and a unique opportunity to appreciate this stunning landscape in the peace and quiet of sunset. Stopping for an aperitif en route at Caillet, passengers will then be treated to a celebratory dinner and musical entertainment at the impressive Grand Hotel de Montenvers, built in 1880.
The highlight of the celebrations will be held on the 9th-11th August – on the actual anniversary itself – where guests can enjoy operatic performances from Opera en Fête followed by a buffet cocktail.
These special evenings will be held every Thursday and Sunday during July, August and September and cost €75 for adults and €53 for children (4-12 years), which includes your return train journey, aperitif, 3 course dinner (inc. wine and coffee) and entertainment. For the anniversary celebrations themselves, tickets cost €105. Reservations should be made in advance with the Compagnie du Mont Blanc (via e-mail below or on +33 (0) 450 53 14 14) in order to guarantee your place and the dress code is one of “casual elegance” with a warm layer for the return train journey. The train departs from Chamonix at 7pm and returns around midnight.
