Three Lives Taken in the Mont Blanc Region
by Alison Shayler | Skinets Administration | published 9-Mar-2010 | last updated 10-Mar-2010
Monday saw the fair weather return after a bitter weekend and sadly a few tragedies out on the mountain.
A snowboarder descending the mythical Vallee Blanche mid morning lost his life following a massive fall of over 10 metres down a crevasse near the ‘Seracs du Geant’. He died instantly.
Two hours later a skier took a terrible fall under the first section of the Aiguille du Midi sliding over 80 metres on the ‘Pre du Rocher’ after mistaking his route and ending up on a very icy couloir. The skier suffered fatal injuries.
Finally late afternoon in the neighbouring resort of Megeve saw a 50 year old skier suffer a heart-attack on the pistes. Despite the quick response from the piste security the skier could not be resuscitated.
These tragic accidents follow the local mountain prevention & rescue organisation the Chamoniarde release of an updated leaflet, designed to make the off-piste skier reflect on their skill, experience, equipment and readiness.
