Aiguille du Midi Cable-car crashes

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

The first leg of the Aiguille du Midi cable car crashed into the lift station during a rountine check carried out every 200 hours. The cable car entered the station at speed causing considerable damage although no one was hurt in the incident and the structure of the installation is fine. Repairs are expected to take several weeks.

The second leg of the cable-car will re-open later this week after an inspection. In the meantime the Montevers Train and access via Italy will continue to allow climbers to reach the peaks.

This is the second incident this year with the cable-car, the main tractor cable having been dropped during maintenance costing €5m to repair and costing the resort in visitors.
