On Saturday 4th September, two climbers were abseiling down the north-west face of le Grépon (3492m) - by the steepest route, one which is poorly equipped for descents and not the ususal course.

Part-way down the face that one of the climber's, Xavier Puthod, 27, ropes became stuck. Having climbed back up to the blockage point he then transfered his rope to a new fastening. As he hung from the new attachment point the spike gave way, dropping him the length of his rope and killing him in the fall.

The PGHM (mountain rescue) were alerted at 7.40pm.
