Do Your Bit for the Mountain

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

On Sunday 27th May, 26 resorts across the Haute Savoie region will participate in a new national clean up day. All morning, professionals, locals, MPs and holidaymakers will pick up the rubbish strewn across the slopes and carelessly tossed from chairlifts during the winter.

The big clean up is not just about getting your hands dirty, organisers also hope to make people aware of the extent of human impact on the delicate Alpine ecosystem. With this larger goal in mind, lectures will be given and films shown.

Last year 1000 volunteers collected a shameful 9 tonnes of rubbish, including: plastic bottles; aluminium cans; food wrappers and cigarette butts.

It is time that we wintersports lovers changed our behaviour and showed some respect for the mountain.
