Freak accident on the Mer de Glace

featured in News & reviews Author Helen McGrory, Chamonix Reporter Updated

We reported yesterday that the Mer de Glace ice cave is closed until the weekend for necessary re-alignment work of the access bridge. Sadly yesterday morning, one of the team carrying out the work was the victim of a freak accident, when a rock fell from the glacier above, hitting him on the head and killing him outright. Despite repeated attempts, rescue workers were unable to revive the 50 year old man from Les Houches and his body was taken down to Chamonix by helicopter.

Whilst this was a complete freak accident, it does put into perspective the risk and effort that the maintenance teams go to, to ensure that the attractions in the Chamonix valley are safe and secure for the thousands of visitors that flock here each year.
