Get revved up for winter!

featured in News & reviews Author Helen McGrory, Chamonix Reporter Updated

It's that time of year when we can begin to get properly excited about the winter. Temperatures are dropping, the high peaks are already snow capped and people have been skiing on the glacier in Tignes for nearly a month already. However, if you're not surrounded by the mountains then the winter may still seem a long way off. Fear not. If you live in London then next week the mountains are coming to you in the form of the Metro Ski & Snowboard Show at Olympia and the Ride Film Festival in Leicester Square.

Now in its 34th year, for many, the Metro Ski & Snowboard Show marks the official start to the winter and it's sure not to disappoint this time round. As well as the usual favourites – the teaching slope where you can take a slide yourself and the pro-rider demos on the purpose built quarter pipe – the show is crammed full of the latest fashions and equipment from big name brands such as Salomon, Burton and Oakley, modelled for you in an explosive fashion show. New this year is the “Gigloo” – an igloo styled venue that will be hosting a number of live bands and DJ sessions in conjunction with XFM. Also new is the 100m2 ice rink brought to you by Easyjet in the heart of the World Resorts Village. Gracefully pirouette in front of the World Resorts Bar area or have a go at “broom hockey”! There will also be some spectacular photographs on display in the Image Gallery and an exhibition by Gallery Midnight on “Art in the Mountains”, featuring a number of popular Alps based artists. The show is on from the 24th – 28th October, 11am – 9.30pm (weekdays) or 10am – 8pm weekend (6pm Sunday) and tickets can be bought in advance or on the door.

If you can't wait until Wednesday, then head to the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square on Monday evening (22nd Oct) when Ride Freesport will be showcasing the latest offerings from a number of British ski filmmakers and photographers. British Freeskier Pat Sharples will be presenting the work of Warren Smith and Melody Sky (Ride), Monkey Vision 2, Pally Learmond Photography, Sticks & Stones, and Camilla Stoddart Photography. After the showcase, the party will continue at the Zoo Bar on Bear Street until the wee hours. To reserve a ticket, please e-mail a list of names attending via the link below and then tickets will be £5 (cash) on the door. Show starts 8.30pm, get there from 7.45pm.

Winter's coming – bring it on!
