Guide Instructor killed on Brevent

featured in News & reviews Author Chris Richard, Updated

On Sunday late morning a 27 year old mountain guide and instructor, Benoit Jacquemont, was killed as he fell over 100m off a cliff on the face of the Brevent. This Chamonix resident was holding an avalanche safety course for 'stagieres' (trainees) called Eurosecurité when he when over the edge. He was then hit moments later by an avalanche, although there is some confusion as to whether he set the avalanche off whilst falling, or if the avalanche caused him to go over the cliff edge.

The avalanche risk for the day was only level 2, and we saw the helicopter taking him of the scene. Later in the day there were several small wet slides, so we made sure we stayed on the pistes.
