Mer de Glace gets a spring (well Autumn!) clean

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

As last year, the Federation Francaise des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne (FFCAM) has again launched an initiative amongst its members to clean up the mountains across France. In this region, the focus of the operation was centred on the Mer de Glace, a site that requires constant maintenance. Last Saturday, 15 members of the local Club Alpin Francaise (CAF) met at the Montenvers station with the sole mission to clean up the section of the glacier just below the Refuge du Requin. Once there, it took no time at all to fill 3 huge bags with old metal cables that littered the area. By the end of the afternoon and after 2 helicopter runs by the CMBH, the team had managed to remove 1.5 tonnes of metal debris from the ice.
