More lifts opened today

After yesterdays bumper (and desperately needed) snowfall, this morning has dawned as one of the most perfect blue sky powder days imaginable. Despite some problems with lift mechanisms freezing up yesterday due to the snow and bitter winds, more of the valley lift system has opened up today. At the time of writing, the following lifts were open:

  • Grand Montets
  • : all except the top station, Pendant and Marmottans chairlifts
  • Le Tour
  • : Charamillon Gondola, Autannes Chairlift, one drag and the Vallorcine Gondola
  • Brevent/Flegere
  • : Brevent Gondola, 4 man chair, beginners drag lift, Cornu chair, Flegere cable car, La Trappe Chair and the Index was under preparation but not yet open.
  • Les Houches
  • : all open except Praz Dru and Table d'Orientation drags

There are sure to be big smiles at apres ski this evening after reports claimed to have measured 1m of snow at 2400m at the top of the new Cornu Chairlift which made its maiden voyage this afternoon. Flegere and Brevent were boasting 30cms of fresh at 1900m, and Grand Montets and La Tour only slightly less with 25cm.

Things were also looking nice at the top of Les Houches this morning with a fresh 20cms of new snow to glide through. However, the fate of the Kandahar, due to be held January 20th/21st on La Verte Piste, has not yet been decided. The Chamonix Club des Sports is not overly concerned though, stating that the only slightly dodgy area is towards the base of the course where it has not been possible to activate the snow cannons. FIS officials will be arriving next Wednesday to make their final decision on whether the races will run.

Other than that, things are looking pretty good in the valley at the moment and with tomorrow set to bring yet more snow, this has to be the weekend to get yourself over here!
