Opening of Tramway du Mont-Blanc is delayed

featured in News & reviews Author Helen McGrory, Chamonix Reporter Updated

The Company du Mont Blanc has announced today that the summer opening of the Tramway du Mont-Blanc (TMB) is to be delayed. Originally, the opening date had been planned for the 16 June 2007 however severe storms that affected the region at the end of May caused significant damage and flooding which has resulted in the opening being pushed back to 30 June 2007.

The TMB is a popular mountain railway line with alpinists as it runs from Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet to the Nid d'Aigle station at the base of the Bionnassay glacier (an altitude of 2372m) where they can begin their ascent of Mont Blanc.

It is still possible for mountaineers who wish to climb Mont Blanc using “voie normale” route to do so though. You simply need to start your ascent from the top of the Bellevue cable car in Les Houches, and rejoin the Nid d'Aigle on foot (the end station for the tramway).

Some other interesting TMB trivia :

The TMB was opened in 1907 with the original intention of running up to the Aiguille du Goûter however world war one suspended work and it was never resumed
It's three carriages are named Anne, Marie and Jeanne after the three daughters of it's original owner!
