The Outdoor Games – a new event in Cham next winter

featured in News & reviews Author Helen McGrory, Chamonix Reporter Updated

As the outdoor sports capital of the Alps, Chamonix is the perfect location to host a new event in the winter sporting calendar – The Outdoor Games. Planned for the second week in February 2008, the principle is simple; 5 teams of athletes will compete in 5 disciplines – skiing, snowboarding, alpinism, base jumping and paragliding over a week. The end goal is to produce a 5 minute film shot in Chamonix during the week that incorporates footage of all 5 disciplines. Examples of what the judges will be looking for are freeride or freestyle sequences from the skiers and boarders and ice climbing or dry tooling from the alpinists. Teams can choose their own terrain in which to shoot their film and have until Friday evening to hand in their completed entry to the judges. All of the films will be shown in the place du triangle de l'Amitié (Tourist Office square) on Saturday evening after which the judges will announce the winner.

In addition, there will also be an ice climbing competition held on an artificial structure made especially for the event, and the “piéce de resistance” will be base jumping and speed riding (paragliding with skis on) off the north face of the Aiguille du Midi. Get there early to bag a good viewing spot at the Plan d'Aiguille!
