Tunnel traffic numbers increasing

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

On Wednesday (27 July 2005) 4359 trucks and lorries used the Mont Blanc tunnel, an increase on last weeks figures where ‘only' 4145 heavy goods vehicles entered the tunnel. This is a familiar picture since the closure of the Frejus tunnel back in June 2005. In the 24 hour period (from midday 13 July 2005 and midday on the 14 July 2005) it was noted that up to 5600 heavy goods vehicles entered the tunnel. Although technically banned from using the route on the 14 July, 1828 lorries passed through the tunnel in the early hours of the 14 July. The remaining 3716 passing through on the 13 July.

Since the closure of the Frejus tunnel, approximately 60% of the lorries that pass through the tunnel used to travel through the Frejus tunnel now travel through the Mont Blanc, a situation not likely to change until the end of August.
