Aiguille du Midi Hotel Restaurant review

Fine dining & regional cuisine in a charming hotel

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Megan Wallwork, Accounts Manager Updated

The Hotel Aiguille du Midi Restaurant in Les Bossons is an idyllic setting for an excellent meal, with stunning views over the Les Bossons glacier and Mont Blanc from the beautiful terrace at lunchtime and a large, grand dining room for an evening meal.

We visited during the relatively quiet interseason period and were welcomed into a busy dining room. Passing the impressive dessert buffet whilst being guided to our table, we had great first impressions of the quality of the cuisine.

The menu provides a variety of set menus from the 'Menu du Terroir' at 24€ for 3 courses of local specialities, the 'Menu du Jour' at 33€ for 5 courses including a cheese board and the dessert buffet to the very special, 6 course Menu de l'Aiguille at 53€. Alternatively, you can let yourself be guided by the labels of local sepcialities and 'specialites maison' on the 'normal' menu.

I chose the Menu du Jour with its starters of gespacho and giant prawn and duck fois gras served with an onion chutney, followed by a fillet of beef with mushroom and red wine sauce, a selection of cheeses and desserts from the buffet. Neill chose the recommended house speciality of the avocado bavarois wrapped in smoked salmon with a creamy curry vinaigrette followed by the savoyard style veal escalope.

Our starters and mains showed us just how talented the Aiguille du Midi chef is, with outstanding presentation and flavours. The bavarois was particularly impressive, as it not only looked excellent on the plate but also provided a fantastic range of flavours with the curry vinaigrette, fresh smoked salmon, creamy avacado with hints of goats cheese and salmon rillettes complimented by a very sweet bread and vegetable crisps. The gespacho was fresh with lovely subtle flavours of cucumber and pepper whilst the foie gras was wonderfully smooth and excellently accompanied by owner Marie-Laure's recommendation of a sweet and fruity wine. My fillet of beef was an exquisite cut of beef cooked perfectly to be very pink, tender and full of flavour. The mushroom sauce was nice and rich and a great accompaniment to the beef as well as the selection of roasted vegetables. These same sides also worked well with the veal and it's delicious salty savoyard smoked ham and creamy Beaufort cheese.

The bottle of Côtes du Rhône selected to accompany our mains was deliciously smooth and continued to flow well until the end of the meal!

If we thought that we had been treated well with these tasty courses, we were to be very pleasantly surprised by what was to follow. My enthusiasm for good cheese was well and truly satisfied by the fantastic selection wheeled over to us on the cheese trolley. The only problem was how to select which to choose as our friendly waitress presented us the goats cheeses, Tommes, Beaufort, Bresse Bleu and many others. We were served a generous selection, of which our picks were the strong and creamy Beaufort and the Bresse Bleu.

Although this course was a hard act to follow in my eyes, I was not to be disappointed as I approached the large dessert buffet and it's many different fresh fruits, tarts and chocolate desserts. Opting between us for a raspberry tartelette, chocolate moelleux, apple tarte and a creamy but crunchy chocolate pudding, we enjoyed the end of our meal enormously and, it was all I could do not to be tempted by a greedy second visit! Luckily for my full stomach, I was distracted by a fruity but strong digestif to finish.

The family run Aiguille du Midi hotel is open for lunch and dinner. It is well worth a visit, whether to enjoy a gastronomic lunch and to take advantage of the beautiful swimming pool and garden during the day in the summer, for a fine dining experience in the evening or for a local treat such as a fondue or a raclette.
