Chamonix avalanche risk warning

High risk of avalanches across the region this week

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

The prefecture of the Haute Savoie have released a warning this week in light of a number of avalanches over the weekend, and a big weather front bringing more snow and wind this week.

The neighbouring Savoie region has already been put on orange alert by Meteo France for similar reasons and as of 4th March the Haute-Savoie region is now also on orange alert for snow, ice & avalanche hazards.

Wind blown snow creating slab avalanches is of particular risk in these conditions, and the prefecture are advising that you do not ski off piste without checking conditions with mountain professionals first, or without being equipped with the knowledge and correct equipment.

It's not just you that could be at risk from avalanches, but other people too, including rescue workers. Check the daily avalanche bulletin via Meteo France or speak to a mountain guide for more advice.
