Last May whilst on a trip to Geneva, US Secretary of State, John Kerry took time out for a spot of cycling which unfortunately ended with him crashing and breaking his femur.

The 71 year old, having now recovered from his injuries, wanted to complete the ascent of the infamous Col de la Colombiere, which is part of the Tour de France route.

Yesterday he finally realised that dream, taking time off from meetings in Geneva to discuss the conflict in Syria to get back on his bike.

Amidst a horde of French police and helicopters, roads were closed to allow Mr Kerry to complete his challenge and by mid afternoon, with the Col well and truly under his belt, Mr Kerry returned to Geneva.
