As you may well already know if you follow this news feed on a regular basis, one of Chamonix's most popular attractions the Montenvers - Mer de Glace has been undergoing a huge transformation.

Work started in May 2016 and then the site was closed for a substantial period from September to December whilst some major building work was carried out.

In mid December the impressive Panoramique restaurant opened to the public and since then work has continued to transform the site, with lots of modernisation and renovations.

The renovations include the refuge / hotel which will now be called the Terminal Neige - Refuge du Montenvers, with its associated Montenvers Restaurant. Also being upgraded is the the train station building, the shop (renamed the "Mer de Glace Boutique") and a new bar will be added, called "Bar des Glaciers".

The restaurants, the bar, and the refuge will be operated, going forward by Sibuet Masions & Hotels, a successful family business with hotels in Megeve, Val Thorens, Saint-Barth and Saint-Tropez.

After one day closure of the entire site yesterday, Montenvers is open again today with the central part of the station now operational and the boutique due to open tomorrow. After this the restaurant re-opens on the 19th June and finally on 1st July, the main refuge, the bar and the far end of the station will open.

An inauguration event is being planned to celebrate the re-birth of this historic site in early July.

Take a look at some of the work that's been going on in these two video clips, for Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the project as well as this one below and a fourth in the main player above.
