Mont Blanc's Gouter route at risk of closure

Chamonix's high mountain office have released a statement and are calling for vigilance, after an increased spate of rock falls in the Gouter couloir.

The couloir is one of the most popular routes to the summit of Mont Blanc, but since the recent heatwave, more rock fall has been noted and OHM and the prefecture are calling for mountaineers to exercise extreme caution if taking this route.

It's not just the danger of rock fall either, they've stressed that the glaciers also represent a clear danger, with weakening snow bridges over crevasses, potentially giving way.

Their advice is to set out as early as possible to avoid being in these high risk areas during the hottest parts of the day, or avoid the Couloir du Gouter route all together. Plenty of other routes are available to mountaineers.

Should the heatwave continue and the conditions on the mountain not improve, we could see the authorities closing the route all together, as happened in the summer of 2015. The video below was take in August 2015.
