Montenvers Mer de Glace renovations & closure

Closure from September to December 2016

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

As we reported back in April the Montenvers train and Mer de Glace will be closing from 5th September to 17th December 2016 due to renovation works.

The site will see renovations taking place on the panoramic restaurant and its terrace and the Grand Hotel at the arrival point of the train.

This work will started in May 2016 but the site will be closed to the public from 5th September for some of the major works to be completed, re-opening again on 16th December 2016. From 17th December the site will be partially re-opened with access to the gondola, ice cave and the new panoramic restaurant. All of the work is due to be completed by the end of July 2017.

During the 103 days the site is closed, access across the Mer de Glace to the mountain huts will be closed too, so anyone wanting to get onto the glacier wishing to access the huts will need to take the Mottets path on the other side of the glacier.

Anyone walking across from the Plan d'Aiguille to Montenvers will only be able to descend on foot via the path at Caillet, which adds an additional one and a half hours to the journey. Access from Chamonix up to the Forbes Signal & onwards to the Plan de l’Aiguille is possible via the Caillet path.
