Mountaineer dies on Mont Blanc ascent
Fatal fall in the Couloir du Gouter
A 65 year Austrian man has sadly died this weekend on an attempted ascent of Mont Blanc via the Gouter Couloir.
Accidents in this couloir have tended to be from loose rock fall, but on this occasion, the man appears to have fallen between 200-250 metres, but with no clear reason why.
The PGHM have launched an investigation into the cause of his death.
Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends at this time.
In a separate incident, two mountaineers had to spend the night on the summit of Mont Blanc on Saturday night, as bad weather prevented their descent. They were airlifted by helicopter to safety at around 11:00 Sunday morning, one of the pair suffering minor frostbite.
