A 57 year old mountaineer suffered a fatal fall yesterday afternoon on the Arete de Rochefort.

The man and his climbing partner had apparently spent the night before on the Dent du Geant.

On setting off to climb the arete, one of the pair fell. The PGHM was alerted when the other man, who had decided against the climb, failed to see his friend return a few hours later.

The man who died has been named as Jean-François Hagenmuller, a local mountain guide and photographer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
