What's on in Chamonix December 2018

It may be the last month of the year but, in the Chamonix Valley, December is the first month of a new winter season. With the ski lifts getting ready to open and Christmas holidays on the horizon, the local calendars are packed full of fantastic events designed to keep everyone amused.

We can expect sports competitions, openings throughout resort, wine tastings and even world-class talks. There will, obviously, also be lots of festive celebrations but we'll publish an article dedicated to Christmas and New Year's Eve events later in December, so keep an eye on our news page if you're coming to Chamonix during 'Noël'.

Winter ski lifts opening

The Compagnie du Mont Blanc has scheduled the partial opening of most of the ski areas in the Chamonix Valley on December 15th. However, this depends on snow conditions and they still haven't made any announcements on whether these planned openings will actually take place. Keep an eye on our news page and social media as we'll let you know as soon as there's any new information. Full opening is scheduled on December 22nd, just in time for Christmas.

Also on December 8th, TEDx Chamonix will take place in the local music school, the EDMI, from 14:00. This independently organised TED event returns to Chamonix once more, this time under the theme 'Imagine'. Speakers include Hollywood underwater camerawoman and commercial diver Dorota Cankowska, skier and filmmaker Sven Kueenle, health researcher and humanitarian worker Katie Whitehouse and neurologist Nick Carruthers. The after-party will be hosted at Cham Sud's favourite American bar and restaurant, the Bighorn Bistro, well-known for its delicious food, amazing selection of craft beer and imaginative signature cocktails.

Le Vert Christmas Market - December 8th

As you are no doubt aware of, most things in December revolve around the last week of the month. There are a plethora of events coming up, from parades to special Christmas menus and New Year's blowouts. We’ll keep you updated with a special end of year edition of ‘What’s on’ closer to the main holidays. In the meantime, check out Le Vert’s Christmas market on December 8th if you want an early helping of yuletide cheer. Browse local, handmade sweets, jewellery, soaps and a lot more while you indulge in some mulled wine and a mince pie or two.

Wine tasting & Michelin-starred lunch - December 15th

Every month, Chamonix's only two-Michelin-starred restaurant, the 'Albert 1er', organises a wine tasting lunch. In December, you can taste a selection of vintages from the Cedric Flaction winery in Switzerland guided by their expert oenologists and sommelier, followed by a five-course gourmet lunch created especially in pairing with the wines.

La Folie Douce opening - December 21st

The mother of all après ski hot spots, La Folie Douce, are opening their first hotel in Chamonix on December 21st. Located at the foot of the Brévent slopes, it will no doubt become the place to be after heading down the mountain. Four restaurants and their signature après-ski parties, complete with champagne spraying, live DJs and performers, will draw the crowds to their terraces overlooking the Mont-Blanc range this winter.
