It might be hard to believe that summer is almost upon us, with fresh snow having fallen this week (yes, really?!?!) but we’re almost at the end of May and it’s only a few weeks until the lifts reopen for summer activities. So, what’s happening in Chamonix in June this year?

Summer Lift Opening - 11th June

The official start of the summer season comes on 11th June when the lift system cranks back into action for 3 months of hiking, biking, climbing, flying and fun. Brevent, Flegere, Le Tour and Les Houches all open on the 11th June, with Les Grands Montets opening shortly after on the 25th.

Flying Frenchies Tribute to Tancrede Melet - 11th June

This group of amazing high-altitude acrobats will be gathering at Le Brevent to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of their dear friend and fellow daredevil, Tancrede Melet. Starting at 13:00, they will be putting on a highline show at the top of Brevent, followed by a procession, film show and activities throughout the afternoon. This will be free to watch and everyone is welcome to come and marvel at the incredible skills and joyful attitude of the Flying Frenchies.

Arcteryx Alpine Academy - 16-19th June

Three days of mountains skills and alpine training get the summer alpine season off to a good start. All of the workshops are now full but there are plenty of free events that you can get involved in such as bouldering, open air photography, trail running, building outdoor shelters, rope techniques and other gnarly mountain-dude stuff.

Fete de la Musique - 21st June

Chamonix’s biggest party night, an all day and all night celebration of music in all its forms. From classical to folk, acoustic to electronic, you’ll find something to suit all ears on the longest day of the year. This free music festival takes place all across France, every year on the summer solstice. The fun kicks off around midday with performances from local choirs and musicians in the town centre, continuing throughout the day on open air stages. As the night draws in the focus turns more to the bars and clubs, where live bands and DJs will be turning up the volume. The usual licensing laws are waived on this night, so the party can carry on until the sun comes up and the music fades out to the sound of the dawn chorus.

Marathon du Mont Blanc - 24-26th June

The first event of the trail running season starts with the Vertical KM on 24th June, a thigh quaking dash from Chamonix town centre straight up to Planpraz du Brevent - 1000m of brutal ascent over just 3.8km of distance. The challenges continue with a 10km, a half marathon, a full marathon and an 80km ultra marathon all taking place over the next few days. Even if you’ve no intention of taking part, it is still a great event to get involved in by cheering and supporting the thousands of runners who push themselves to their limits over extremely tough terrain - all for a free beer at the finish line.

Musiques en Stock - 30th June

This mini music festival takes place just 30 minutes from Chamonix in a little town called Cluses. A stage is set up in the square, food and drink stalls line the streets, and people from all around flock to sunbathe beside the river and enjoy the free concerts. The ambience is usually pretty chilled and they’ve had some surprisingly big names play in the past such as Stereophonics, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Asian Dub Foundation. Some Chamonix transfer companies will be running minibuses there and back.
