A round-up of the best events and activities in Chamonix this month

featured in News & reviews Author Alison Shayler, Chamonix Reporter Updated

March is here and it looks like winter is back!

There is plenty going on in Chamonix both on and off the mountain. Here are a few of the events, parties, shows and things to do with the family you can enjoy this month.

Torch Light Descent

Torchlit Descent - 1st March

Start the month off with a magical evening at Les Planards, as the instructors from ESF Chamonix put on a display of glowing torches descending the mountain at night. Everyone is welcome and it is free to watch.

Freerando ski BanZag, Chamonix

Banzag - 4th March

Banzag combines ski touring with freeriding; everyone is welcome to enter this fun competition where you are judged by your speed on the way up and your style on the way down. Sponsored by Zag skis, there are prizes to be won.

Run & Skate - 5th March

The annual Chamonix cross-country skiing and trail running race takes place this weekend, starting and finishing in the field behind the sports centre. Races can be done in relay teams of two, or by individuals. There are 4 different races to choose from, including a running only course. The atmosphere is fun rather than fiercely competitive and spectators are very welcome.

Nitro Good Times #1 at Le Tour

Nitro Good Times - 5th & 19th March

Explore the summit snowpark at Le Tour with Nitro Good Times, an open jam session where everyone is welcome to shred or just watch.

DVA Days at Grands Montets, Argentiere

DVA Days at Les Grands Montets - 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th March

Spring snow can be notorious for increased avalanche conditions, and with all the powder that we’re getting this week now is a great time to brush up on your search and rescue skills. Free workshops are running over the next few weeks to teach you how to use your avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe to find and recover people buried in snow. Invaluable, even if you’ve done it before.

Wine Tasting at Le Delice - 7th & 21st March

Sample 6 wines and tuck into some tapas in the friendly surroundings of Le Delice in Les Houches. This evening runs every second Tuesday and costs just 25€ per person, it is popular and the venue is so small, so we highly recommend booking your place in advance.

Ride the Snake - 10th-13th March

Pros and amateurs come together to Ride the Snake over 3 days of competitions, demos and parties. Great fun either to take part in or just to watch.

Saint Patrick’s Day - 17th March

Many bars throughout Chamonix will be celebrating Ireland’s national holiday; mostly by drinking copious amounts of Guinness and wearing silly hats. One place that always puts on a great St Patrick’s party is Munster Bar, Chamonix’s only Irish pub. Expect live music, dancing, raucous singing and plenty of craic.

Chambre Neuf Apres Ski Bar, Chamonix

Apres-Ski and Parties

The merriment continues throughout March with all the usual events such as Tequila Tuesdays at La Terrasse, open mic every Thursday at Munster Bar, quiz night every Thursday at La Yaute, live jazz every Saturday at Hotel Mont Blanc and apres-ski every night except Saturdays at Chambre Neuf. As winter turns to spring and the evenings become lighter, enjoy a drink and a few tunes outside on the funky little terrace at Cool Cats with Baltha every Sunday evening from 4:30pm.

Family Activities

March brings the first signs of spring to the mountains and this is a beautiful time of year to capture the transition on camera. Join professional photographer and Chamonix tour guide, Teresa, on a ramble through the hidden treasures of Chamonix. You can come along just for the walk and her unique insights, or bring your camera along and benefit from her expert tips on taking a great photo. Teresa’s photo walks run on various dates throughout March, and private tours can be booked on request. Ice skating and paret sledging are also great activities to enjoy together.

Weekly Markets

If you want to sample some local produce and perhaps practise a bit of French, have a browse round the local markets where you’ll find all sorts of Alpine treats such as cheese, meat, wine, seasonal fruit and vegetables, freshly baked bread, jam, nougat and more. They are held weekly in Chamonix, Les Houches and Vallorcine.
