What's On in Chamonix November 2017

November is usually the quietest month of the year, with everyone either taking a well-earned break or getting their heads down and prepping for winter. However, there are still a few things to look forward to this month.

A slightly shorter list this month, here’s what we think should be on your radar.

Bourse de Bighorn

On Wednesday the 8th, Bighorn Bistro are hosting their annual ski sale just in time for the start of the season. Whether you’ve just arrived for the winter season and you’re looking to pick up your first pair of skis or you’re a veteran looking to complete your quiver, you’re sure to find something. In addition to skis, you’ll find all the accoutrements to get you ready for winter. Or maybe you’ve been here too long and you’ve realised you don’t need eight jackets and three pairs of ski boots, come along at 12:00, grab a table and start selling. You’ll also be able to have a few beers and get some food while you geek out on gear, topped off with the ski flick du jour.

Magnetic Mountains

A story three years in the making. Steve Wakeford suffered a near-fatal fall in the mountains around Chamonix. Instead of hanging up his climbing gear, he started asking why. Why take the risk? Why keep climbing? Follow Steve as he prepares to re-climb the route that almost took his life, talking to leading figures in mountaineering along the way in an attempt to understand the irresistible pull of the mountains. The world premiere of “Magnetic Mountains” will take place at the Espace Animations in Les Houches on the 10th.

Beaujolais Nouveau

Fermented for only a few weeks, the release of this ‘new wine’ has become a tradition across France. Being produced simply and quickly, this wine is made for immediate consumption. However, the grapes are still subject to the seasonal variations that mark the differences between vintages. As such, they can be seen as an early indicator of the quality of the year's wine harvest. Many bars in Chamonix will be stocking the new wine and holding tasting sessions.

Préambules Cinema Festival

The sixth edition of Chamonix’s very own youth film festival, open to filmmakers aged 12-25. The festival is designed to present the producers, cinematographers and directors of the future to the public and give these young creators a taste of the big screen. This year’s theme is “Day & Night”, contestants are asked to produce a short film of no more than 2 minutes, of which 20 are shortlisted and put in the running for 6 prizes. Prize-winning films will be shown at Cinema Vox, ahead of feature films for the next year. Screenings and prize giving will be the evenings of the 17th and 18th, Cinema Vox entry is free.

Bourse Aux Skis

The big one. Get everything you need for winter at the lowest prices, all items except paragliders are €400 or under. Local shops and pros often come here unload the excessive amounts of gear they’ve accumulated, so you can usually find some pretty high quality, recent stuff here. Just get there early as it can get pretty busy! The sale is on Saturday the 18th at the covered tennis courts just outside of town. If you’re selling, you’ll have to drop things off the day before and pick up your unsold gear or cash the day after the sale.
