What's On Over Christmas in Chamonix

Where to eat, drink & be merry this Christmas in Chamonix

Chamonix is already feeling very festive; lights are going up and the smell of mulled wine is wafting on the air. Here is our guide of what's on during the Christmas holidays.

Christmas Market

The centre of Chamonix will be full of Christmas cheer from the 16th December with wooden chalets crammed full of festive goodies. Artisan crafts, local products, unique gifts, tasty treats… During the run-up to Christmas the village will be a hub of excitement with parades, entertainments, visits from Santa, and plenty to keep the kids entranced.

Christmas Concerts

If you fancy a good sing-song to get into the Christmas spirit then you’ll find plenty of opportunity at the following places:

  • 15th December 19:30, Chamonix - come along to the Chambelles Christmas Cabaret at Les Caves for a bit of glitz and glamour as they belt out a few favourite show tunes and yuletide numbers.
  • 18th December 18:00, Chamonix - the Compagnie des Guides prove they can do more than rescue hapless mountaineers when they treat us to an hour of their dulcet tones at the Eglise Saint-Michel.
  • 19th December 18:00, Chamonix - the Chambelles Carol Concert takes place at the Eglise Reformée, with all proceeds going to charity. Festive cheer, santa hats and all the Christmas classics with the lovely ladies of the Chambelles choir.
  • 21st Decembre 20:30, Les Houches - choral concert by the Harmonie Municipale des Houches at Espace Olca. Free entry.

Father Christmas

Don’t miss your chance to meet the big man and let him know what you’d like in your stocking! He’ll be making a special trip to the Alps, stopping off at the Christmas market in Vallorcine on 18th December, in Argentiere on 23rd December and in Chamonix on 24th December.

Christmas Eve

Many countries celebrate on the 24th rather than on the 25th and with Chamonix being the international town that it is, we get to do both!

For a Scandinavian experience, head over to Chambre Neuf bar at the Hotel Gustavia on Christmas Eve; they’ll be serving a traditional lunch for 39€ a head, including the obligatory screening of Donald Duck, followed by a raucous apres-ski with live music and DJ - you can’t get much more Swedish than that!

The French also have their main festive feast on the 24th and it usually features duck or guinea fowl, seafood and shellfish, figs and chestnuts, cheeses and a chocolate Yule Log. The menu at Hotel Heliopic won’t disappoint at 60€ per person, with a special children’s menu for 30€. In Les Bossons the Hotel Aiguille du Midi have a set menu for 43€ per person too.

For a truly chic Christmas, we are very tempted by the menu at Cap Horn - six courses of decadent dishes for 70€ per person, available either on the evening of the 24th or lunchtime on the 25th.

Reservation will be essential for Christmas, find details of all Chamonix Restaurants here.

Christmas Day

For some folks (OK, mostly Brits) Christmas Day is all about a massive roast lunch with all the trimmings, followed by pudding and as many mince pies as you can manage.

Hotel Le Vert has it covered with three sittings throughout the day, to suit those with and without children. A trio of starters, followed by a roast dinner and polished off with Christmas pud will keep everyone happy, as will live music later on in the day. Meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans will all be well-catered for.

Le Delice in Les Houches has something of a reputation for their great food and friendly ambience; Christmas Day promises to be no different with a five course menu featuring all the classics such as roast turkey, chestnut and sage stuffing, bread sauce and plenty of festive cheer. They also cater for everyone with vegetarian, fish and children’s options.

Hotel Les Lanchers in Les Praz is offering a delicious sounding and well-priced three course feast with aperitif on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day; the menu makes the most of both French and British flavours with pork pies, oysters, stuffed turkey and a ratatouille crumble to get your mouth watering.

Festive Spirit

Get some practise in for New Year’s Eve and party your way through the festive season in Chamonix. There’ll be live music with Reel Relish on Christmas Eve and drinks promos with DJ Wonka at La Terrasse, and The Jekyll invites you to join them for live music and DJs on Boxing Day.

Most of Chamonix’s bars and pubs will be open every evening throughout the Christmas period, so keep an eye on our events calendar for any live music and parties.

Check in next week when we'll let you know what's going on at New Year's Eve in Chamonix...
