Chamonix Apres Ski Report:1st May 2009

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

It's the final week of the season and, as usual, the winter will be going out with a bang this weekend with loads of events and parties in store.

Just as Chamonix finally conceded to the idea that we had seen the last of the snow and that summer had taken hold; out of know where, like a gift from the seasonnaire gods, the clouds opened and delivered a huge dump of snow and with it one of my best powder days of the season - which is saying something for April!

There was obviously plenty of reason to celebrate after this epic day and with all the end of season parties taking place this week, there are plenty of opportunities to do just that! By four forty five after a day of fresh tracks, I was more than ready to take advantage of Happy Hour at Monkey and drink away those back leg blues.

It's not only the clouds that have been busily working away this week. Grands Montet has been gearing itself up for the end of season party and Freeride day that will take place this Sunday the 3rd of May.

The day traditionally marks the official end of the season, although the lifts don't actually close until May the 10th. There will be a whole host of activities taking place at up the mountain with one of the centre pieces being a 60 ft water slide, over which you are more than welcome to try your luck. There will also be DJs, BBQs and plenty of free ride entertainment, including a 50m rail. There will also be prizes awarded to the best fancy dress, so if ever there was a reason to wear frills on the piste this is it!

The official after party will be taking place at Le Vert and they will be laying on their usual free shuttle service every half an hour from the casino for those reluctant to brave the walk. Le Vert sent us the following update on the night:

“We have a hog roast from 16.00 followed by Matt Reardon playing live and "unplugged" in the Garden. After 10pm we have some major DJs with Soul of Man from The UK's Fingerlickin' Records, followed by top local DJs Joe Volpeliere, Sumo and others! ENTRY IS FREE!"

Le Savoy bar in Argentiere will also be pulling in the crowds after the party with the offer of pizza slices for €2 ,pints for €3 and a good old BBQ.

Other nights to look out for :

Friday May 1st : Pirate Party at the Monkey
Saturday May 2nd : 2 4 1 cocktails all night at Le Savoy
Saturday May 2nd :DJ DROP and Asian food at MBC

This has most definitely been a winter worth celebrating. Record snow levels and a vibrant après scene this year have once again proved that Chamonix is undoubtedly one of the best ski destinations to visit.

As this is my last report for the winter, I thought I'd take a look back though my copious albums of apres photos and pick out some of the highlights to go out with. Enjoy!
