Chamonix Apres Ski Report: 14th March 2009

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

We have been some very lucky little Chamonix dwellers this season as there's been no let up in the snow so far and, true to form, just as the après ski kicked in this Wednesday night, so did the snow! We toasted it's arrival with €1 pints at Monkey Bar in Cham Sud. This spot is fast becoming a favourite of mine after a purse string battering season so far.

As I have reluctantly come to realise, Chamonix can be an expensive place if you're not too good at keeping an eye on the finances, but for those savvy shoppers amongst us, there are some great deals to be found if you know the right places to look. Luckily for me and you I do, unless of course you'd prefer to hear about my nights in with the Gavin and Stacey box set?

I harp on about Chambre Neuf every week but it is an unmissable après ski bar, especially if you're on a budget! If two for one cocktails (between the hours of 20:00 and 22:00), cheap pitchers of beer and one of the best bands in town is your cup of tea then Chambre Neuf is the place to go!

Perhaps you're looking for somewhere to eat out, but afraid of breaking the bank? Don't despair, take advantage of any of the following deals and you'll be singing:

Le Jekyll - Monday Night means half price ribs! Munch away in the comfort of this cosy bar with live music by Sam Calver and then head to the bar area for €9 pitchers between 18:00 and 21:00 or €15 cocktail jugs between 21:00 and 22:00.

The Office - A friendly and popular bar in Argentiere where you can blag yourself a curry and a pint of Fosters for €12 on a Monday night, or set yourself up for the day with a scrumptious Sunday roast for €12!

MBC - This section would not be complete without mentioning half price chicken wings every Monday Night. They come highly recommended by yours truly, along with everything else on the Mexican themed menu which is all very reasonably priced.

This week sees Le Vert hosting the celebrations for the Boss des Bosses competition this coming Wednesday the 18th March and there'll be buy one get one free on main courses.

The two for one theme continues on the pistes this week as two exciting events are happening at Les Grands Montet this Wednesday the 18th. The first starts at 11:00 and sees Chamonix take on Zermatt, Val D'Isere, Meribel, Courchevel and Verbier in the Boss Des Bosses competition. This is an annual downhill mogul competition featuring 9 of the the best skiers, two boarders and two telemarkers from each resort competing against each other. This always makes for excellent viewing and the rivalry in the air is tangible!

The Helly Hanson Winter ride is the second event taking place this Wednesday to decide the best off piste riders out there. The event is €10 to enter and it's a race against the clock. Anyone can enter ,as long as you have a helmet and a transceiver - so get involved!
