Chamonix Apres Ski Report: 18th February 2011

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Katy Sunderland, Updated

Well thanks to the snow dance last Friday night, it has arrived and we can now believe it does still exist! Depending on who you want to listen to there is lots more on the way next week…….excellent! And don't forget our Italian neighbours are having a bit more luck and Courmayeur is worth a day trip and an après session.

It was another good weekend of entertaining rugby. Both England and France looked very good winning their matches this weekend. It looks like the game of the Six Nations lies between these two teams and should make for some great après sessions on the Saturday 26th February, kick off 18:00pm.
The week commenced with love in the air and saw a busy night in the bars and restaurants around town. We headed down to Munchies on Rue du Moulin and we were not disappointed. For those of you that haven't been or heard of it Munchies is an excellent restaurant that serves outstanding quality Asian-fusion food. The menu had a little revival since I had been last but the classics were still there Tempura baby squid and Duck Teriyaki!
We headed down a little early planning on a drink in Mix Bar, which is well known for its tasty cocktails and funky tunes, but had to leave this till afterwards as there is a new bar in town (yes another one!) After an unfortunate fire in 2006 the aptly named Bar du Moulin has re-opened! It has a beautiful location looking out over the river and has the old wooden mill right outside the back window. The ginger champagne cocktails were tasty and drinking these we were treated to samples of cheese and fancy salmon snacks, definitely worth a visit!

Monday night was a pretty big one and I popped into the Derapage on the way home, enticed in by some live music. I didn't catch the band's name but they were an excellent live salsa/samba combo. The bar was crowded with people twirling each other round. The Derapage is easy to miss as it's just down the side alley next to Mojo's Sandwich Shop off the main square in town. They have same great deals and Monday nights are 2-4-1 on beers, wines, house spirits and vodka shots.

Thursday night there was a torch light parade by the ESF Instructors at the Savoy Slopes in town with Vin chaud and hot chocolate being served. If this sounds like your sort of thing then on February 25th, from 17:00pm at Maison de la Montagne, ESF are having a big party with the children and the instructors. There is going to be free snacks, prizes, fireworks and a live concert.

Next week also sees the return of the Winter Sessions. Next Friday it's a Disco Bloodbath fancy dress party, so combine those disco flares and platform heels with a bit of bloodbath gore and lets see what you come up with!

One more thing to look out for this week while you are out having a few beers is ‘Ernest, your best friend ever'. No it's not a person but return of one of Chamonix's great free monthly magazines full of loads of cool interviews and life around the valley.

Don't forget to keep an eye on the What's On Calendar for a full list of events over the winter season. You can also find full Bar and Restaurant listings in the Dining and Going Out section of the site.
