Chamonix Apres Ski Report: 21st February 2009

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

As half term descended upon Chamonix the crowds have not only been rushing to the slopes but also to the bars and have been welcomed with open arms with a host of events and special nights!

The big event of the week was Gilles Peterson playing at The Podium as part of the Winter Sessions-Part Two. After the success of Winter Sessions Part One at New Year we had high expectations for the next event of this kind which was to be held at the same location, just next to the ice skating rink. After all the hype leading up to the event the atmosphere in the Podium was buzzing on the night even before Gilles took to the stage and once he did there was no let up in the dancing until the early hours of the morning. He played a mix of dance and R&B which went down a storm with the happy crowds who had packed in to see such a big name in Chamonix. The atmosphere was just as pumped in the second room where DJ's such as DJ Skitz and Deadly Hunta played their own special blend of party tracks. There are more exciting instalments of The Winter Sessions still to come over the next few months so stay tuned to find out all the details.

It's safe to say it took me a couple of days to recover from such a big night and I can thank a trip to Munchies for speeding this up. Undoubtedly this Swedish run restaurant is my favourite place to eat in town. The Thai inspired food is always fantastic, as is the service and is guaranteed to leave you planning your next visit before you have even stepped foot outside the door . This time I opted for Smoked Shrimps, Duck Teriyaki and Chocolate Mud Cake and was delighted with all of it.

With Munchies looking out over the Rue de Moulin directly into The Mix bar it was only right to pop across the road to round off such a splendid evening and with Privilege just next door to that is was only fair we had a quick look in their too! Privilege has live music most nights of the week and we arrived to a dance floor packed which happy holiday makers. We were still not quite ready to don our dancing shoes just yet and so we opted for a comfy candlelit table around the back to round off a very eventful week.

On my way through town earlier to Munchies I couldn't help notice the large ice climbing wall that had sprung up in the centre square accompanied by a large screen and lots of other climbing related activities that anyone could have a go at . It is all part of the Nissan Outdoor Games that are taking place this weekend. Top athletes from all over the world representing the extreme sports of skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, speed-flying and BASE-jumping have come to Chamonix to take part in the event . Sports and creativity are combined and the athletes and artists have been working together to create a short 5 minute film and 20 photographs. The final entries are being shown on the big screen in town this weekend.

Other nights to look forward to :
If you missed the Podium event don't despair as a Le Vert is hosting similar night on Saturday and many of the same DJ's that played at the event will be there including DJ Skitz and Deadly Hunta. It promises to be a fun night and if Le Vert past events are anything to go by it certainly will be.

Comedy night at The Jekyll
I am yet to make it to The Jekyll's comedy night but I am assured by everyone that has been in the past that is well worth a visit. The next comedy night is this Sunday-Reserve you tickets at the bar now!
