Chamonix Apres Ski Report: 22nd April 2008

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Helen McGrory, Chamonix Reporter Updated

Another week and another string of parties to choose from – but it's a tricky balance to attain when the snow is this good… Last orders or first lift??

There were bound to be a few sore heads last weekend after the monumental LaLaLand Party at the Podium bar at the ice rink. A number of bleary eyed party goers were spotted heading into Le Vagabond around 7.30am on Sunday morning for a bit of breakfast before hitting the sack. I wonder if they had recovered enough to make it to the closing party of South Bar that evening, where €20 got you entrance and an endless flow of whatever you wanted to drink for the entire night. I'm sure there wasn't much need for an end of season stock take afterwards and sadly that is now it for South Bar until next winter. **Correction! South Bar will be opening for the summer - hurrah! and so you can settle yourself on their sunny terrece from June 13th**

Down in Les Gaillands, Le Vert has got a couple of cracking nights coming up this week with none other than Tuggy from Basement Jaxxx in da house. Back for the second year running, he will be playing a live drums set on Wednesday and then returning the following night to mix up some of the latest big tunes on the decks.

DJs seem to be the big thing remaining live music wise around town, as many of the seasons favourite bands have now played their last sets. Soul Food on Rue des Moulins has DJs playing pretty much every night of the week and you can catch the funky tunes of DJ Blo this Friday or the Soulfood Bros on Sunday night. Friday seems to be funk night in Chamonix as you can also catch DJ Pico at Le Pub.

There are still some live bands to be seen though; Angus is still playing nightly at Le Privilege, Rass are on at the Monkey on Wednesday but the main one will be the Juggernaut of Rock at La Terrasse. After their highly successful Bodstock event last week, where they raised €2000 for Cancer Research, la Terrasse is building up to it's final blowout of the season on Saturday night and the big closing party!

Other closing parties not to be missed this week are: No Escape, also on Saturday and Fubar in Argentiere will be hosting a bin bag fancy dress night on Friday to see the season out.

Although many of the bars have these big end of closing parties, not all of them actually close afterwards, so don't worry if you're still coming out to visit – you're not going to be greeted by a load of boarded up windows and tumbleweed rolling down the high street. The nightlife just takes on a more relaxed feel as thoughts turn to long summer evenings and shorts and flip flops. However, we've still got one of the best events of the season to look forward to – the Freeride Days on May 4th, Grands Montets – the official end to the season and an event not to be missed!
