Chamonix Apres Ski Report: 26th January 2007

It took long enough but the snow finally arrived in Chamonix this week, which of course meant that there was a lot of celebrating to do!

Last Sunday I felt like I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, as usual there was loads' going on in Chamonix and I found myself torn between two brilliant events. So like the optimistic party girl I am I decided not to choose but rather to go to both! We started the evening at the comedy night which was hosted at Le Jekyll. I have detailed in previous reports the set up for the night, but once again I cannot praise enough how well run and what great value for money the event is. I have not come across anything to rival it, the only thing I would change from my previous reports is that due to its popularity you do need to get there early. The tables and seating are reserved for those who opt for the dinning promotion, so I would encourage anyone who decides to go to get there as early as possible.

Once we were all laughed out we headed across town to Cantina. The evening was organised by Knowledge and although it got off to a slow start the night turned out to be a roaring success. There were a few small hitches with the music, but the crowd absolutely loved the tunes and so turned a blind eye. Although this was not the best night of the season it was worth the walk and Cantina remains one of my favourite night spots in town.

This Monday we decided to have a civilised evening at Cha Cha Cha, a wonderfully classy wine tasting bar where they hold tastings each night of the week ranging from specific regions to whiskeys, to my personal favourite champagne. As well as having the chance to sample extremely varied products, the setting for the evening is very chic and modern with a very and friendly informative staff team. As I explained to my boss, it is a great night out and the fact that you are learning makes it far easier to justify drinking 6 glasses of champagne on a work night!

Wednesday night we headed to Le Jekyll for a promotional event run by Natives.co.uk. There were free drinks and prizes offered as bait to draw people in, but am very glad we went as there was plenty of information about seasonal work options, and subsequently I had a look at their website www.natives.co.uk which was packed with useful advice. The event was not well advertised and I believe that had they spread the word more they could have drawn a bigger crowd, but for future reference if any of you hears of such an event it is worth showing your face.

This week everyone in Chamonix seemed to have a new lease of life following the snowfall. We were reminded of why we were here and so decided to get on the mountain as much as possible. For a really authentic winter mountain experience, we decided to go husky dog sledding which is guaranteed fun for all ages. With your heart racing and your lungs full of fresh pine air, a guide will lead the way while you experience the great outdoors and explore untouched snow whilst in command of a team of huskies. It is also worth knowing that if requested, often you can make your final destination a mountain restaurant, so why not combine this with some snow shoeing or even bum board back down the mountain to give yourselves a mini adventure to remember and also burn off some of those evil calories French food is full of.

Thursday, there is as usual a variety of options to keep you entertained. As I mentioned last week there is live music on a Thursday at Bar'd Up, which will probably be my destination this evening, as after a manic week I could do with a more chilled out pace. This week will feature Kendal ‘almost' Mc fly who I have yet to see perform so am very intrigued, and the live music will start at 10.30pm giving you plenty of time to stock up on some carbs and have a long soak before heading out.
Juggernaut of Rock, who we normally see perform at La Terrasse, will tonight be putting on a show at The Office from 10pm onwards. The Office has been newly revitalised and offers a great chance to have a change of scenery being based in Argentiere.

Well today is Aussie Day, so g'day mate and throw another shrimp on the Barbie!! There is plenty going on in Chamonix to celebrate this fantastic day where we appreciate everything Australian, from Neighbours to Fosters. For the most authentic feeling in the Alps, Bar'd Up will be shipping in 3 tons of sand for a three day party, making it the only bar in Chamonix with a beach! The Office are also getting into the spirit of things, fosters for just 1 euro with an Aussie Passport and free shots for anyone in beachwear. If you don't fancy going out in your summer clothes in minus 13 and are not a huge fan of fosters then there are other events happening this Friday. If you are in the mood for some good music then head down to Cantina, as PICO will be taking on TONIO in a FunkyDiscoReggaeRagga battle.

I am still awaiting the opening of Fu Bar, the scheduled opening last weekend was postponed however I have still not been informed of a subsequent date. As soon as I get any further details I will put the information on the what's on calendar as I am sure this will be a great night out. How can alcohol and a mechanical bull not be a good combination!?
