Chamonix Apres Ski Report: 28th January 2011

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Katy Sunderland, Updated

Well there is still no snow and there seems to be none on the way, so it's a good job we've had some great entertainment this week to keep us busy. I want to say a massive thank you to the Winter Sessions Crew for putting on yet another unforgettable night at Le Podium last Friday. As always there were outstanding performances from the WS local crew, the lasers and resident DJ's in the backroom were on fire and Norman Jay had everyone busting some serious moves with his mash up of old classics. The atmosphere was electric and as always five hours felt like five minutes!

The good news is Norman is heading back to Chamonix for the Winter Sessions Weekender in April, the bad news is we have to wait till the 25th February for our next Winter Sessions fix, when Disco Bloodbath are coming to Cham.

Town was a hive of activity at the weekend when the Nissan Freeride Competition arrived; outdoor bars, music and some impressive skills being shown at the set of rails that were set up outside the tourist information office. It was disappointing that they had to move the action over to Italy. The buses filled up quickly and I know everyone right, left and centre was hitching lifts over to catch a glimpse of the action, I hope you all made it. Aurélien Ducroz achieved success and reclaimed his title and the French dominated the men's snowboard sections. Everyone headed to Le Vert on Sunday night for the after party which went until the wee hours of the morning.

The activity hasn't stopped this week, it has just changed direction. This time it is Kandahar Fever that's descended. 40 000 spectators are expected to make their way to Les Houches to cheer on the competitors this weekend. The event is totally free and pedestrians will have access to the slopes either side of the Verte piste, so grab a spot to watch the action! The finish line will be near the Bellevue lift station with stands, entertainments and lots of cow bells.

Tuesday night saw Burns night celebrations going off in style. Unfortunately I
was holed up with the dreaded flu that seems to be doing the rounds at the moment so I sent along some back up to The Pub to make the most of the dancing and haggis. Adam the Bagpiper provided some excellent Scottish tunes and everyone gave the Celidh dancing a whirl, literally!

Wednesday saw all the auzzies out in force celebrating Australia Day; Le Vert had a get together and a BBQ. Bard'up also celebrated in style and filled the bar with sand so Chamonix had its very own Bard'up Beach!

All this week Chamonix Cinema Vox is showing the latest Harry Potter in its original version. The cinema is still being threatened with closure so head down and support it one night this week. Other nights to look out for are the Tapas at O'Byrne's, the Physi girls at The Pub, and I almost forgot the opening of the new Y bar tonight where Yak and Yeti used to be, I'll bring you the full review next week!

Don't forget to keep an eye on the What's On Calendar for a full list of events over the winter season. You can also find full Bar and Restaurant listings in the Dining and Going Out section of the site.
