Chamonix Apres-Ski Report: 3rd April 2013

Stand-up comedy & 2 big parties this week

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Alison Shayler, Chamonix Reporter Updated

In a week of decidedly mixed weather the sun shone through when it counted and gave us a beautiful Easter weekend. From Sunday through til today it has been blue skies and sunshine all the way, spring is definitely in the air!

Perfect for a bit of a hike to counteract all those choccie eggs and hot cross buns that got demolished over the weekend... One of my favourite paths is now pretty much easily walkable all the way along now, thanks to the snow being well packed down and hardened underfoot. Starting from behind the golf course in Les Praz (next to the Flegere cable car) you can walk all the way to Argentiere in around 2 hours, there are a few short hills to get the calves warmed up but nothing too gnarly and you get a bit of everything from gurgling streams, to rushing rivers, magical forests, snowy sparkly pastures, charming old chalets and cracking views of Mont Blanc and Les Grands Montets. You'll see a lot of deer tracks and other animal prints, so keep your eyes open for any furry creatures keeping a low profile amongst the trees. The path splits into two about 2/3 of the way along; follow the higher La Joux route for the best views and more tranquil surroundings or take the lower, more direct, route to Argentiere if you are short on time. Although the path is easily walkable you'll still need hiking boots, preferably ones that come quite high up the ankle as you'll end up with cold wet feet otherwise!

On arriving in Argentiere we decided to reward ourselves with that most traditional Easter dinner - nachos and beer! The Office Bar does a very tempting deal of a pitcher of beer and a big bowl of nachos covered in cheese, salsa, guacamole and crème fraiche for just 14€.

Next Monday is, sadly, the last Jekyll Comedy Night of this winter. One of the best value nights in Chamonix, you can enjoy a pie dinner and stand-up comedy from 2 different acts for just 25€. We went last Monday and had a great night; fantastic homemade pies served with chips or roasted spuds and veg (choice of 3, including a veggie option) and quality entertainment from Bryan Lacey and Carl Donnelly. The venue is small and personal with the comedians being so close to the front row that they occassionally step on a few toes, great for the ambience but don't expect to get away lightly with any heckling - even a whisper to your mate won't go unnoticed and will lead to the sort of "would you share that with the class" kind of embarrassment that you probably haven't experienced since school. Make sure you don't miss the last show of the season; tickets are 25€ for dinner and seats, 15€ for seats only and 10€ for standing room - booking in advance is recommended +33 (0) 633 06 81 10.

If you want to have a fun night, a few drinks and help out a very worthwhile cause then get along to La Terrasse tonight for the Disability Snowsports UK (DSUK) fundraising night, organised by Crystal Holidays. You could even come away with a splendid prize such as 2 nights B&B at Hotel Gustavia, a brand new pair of Salomon skis, dinner at a number of local restaurants, wine tasting at ChaChaCha, ski/snowboard lesson with ESF, guided descent of the Vallée Blanche with Evolution 2, and much more. Prizes have all been generously donated by local sponsors, so as much of the proceeds as possible will be going directly to DSUK, who help disabled people to enjoy skiing and snowboarding using specialist equipment and instructors. Tickets are 15€ and include a beer, a burger and a raffle ticket - buy in advance by calling +33 (0) 634 49 60 09 or on the door from 7:30pm. More details can be found on the Facebook Page:
