Chamonix Activity Report: 17th June 2010

featured in Activity reviews Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

So now it seems the not so good weather has taken hold here in the valley with a fair bit of rain passing through, and it seems fairly persistent with hardly a gap in the clouds for the past couple of days. This shouldn't stop activities outside here in the mountains, but it certainly doesn't help the motivation! With a good waterproof kit on you can still enjoy mountain biking, hiking, and of course river activities such as hydro speeding and river rafting are just some of the activities Evolution 2 cater for.

Evolution 2 have just released their summer activity plan and they have a lot in store for outdoor enthusiasts arriving in to this wonderful valley during this season. So get online and check it out, through one company you can go on a guided hike, ski, bike and many other activities. It's a really good idea to book on their guided activities especially if you aren't entirely sure of the best route to take or how to perform a certain activity, or even if you just need a bit of extra motivation!

This weekend will see the official opening of the new downhill track at Flegere, some of the lucky few got to give it a go before the course actually opens this weekend and there has been some really good things said about it. Although with all this rain it might not be in the best condition for the first few days, so fingers crossed for some warmer dryer weather to give it a go ASAP!

With a couple of the mountains open from this weekend and of course the Aguille du Midi still open for high mountain touring, hiking, climbing and ice climbing the summer is definitely upon us now, even if the weather system pushing its way through at this current moment in time doesn't hold the same opinion! And then of course on Monday the 21st is Fete de la Musique which is in my opinion the official start to Chamonix summer time, kind of like the New Years Eve of the summer this party is epic and starts the season off with a bang followed by a painful world ending hangover!

If you are feeling like the summer is a sordid love affair and you're kind of going behind the winters back by even expressing the smallest amount of enjoyment toward the summer months, then there are a few answers for you! A lot of people back in the UK don't know that you can actually ski and board in the mountains of Europe throughout the year, and in the area of Chamonix you have high mountain glaciers more accessible for mountaineers. There are glaciers in Switzerland, France and Austria open year round for park and piste riding and many within a 2 hour drive of Cham. One Chamonix originated company called Blue Mile Snowsports, are catering for advanced snowboarders with the will to become better riders before the winter season starts using mainly the Hintertux glacier in Austria right up to the start of the winter season. They have some very unique ideas on coaching experienced riders and actually guarantee you will become a better rider through them! So why not start looking toward your winter shenanigans and book something through them! bluemilesnowsports.com
