Chamonix Activity Report: 1st August 2004

featured in Activity reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

We have been enjoying the summer now the weather is much improved. Day time temperatures have been easily 28-30 degrees. Lots of people are out and about. Rafting seems very popular this season. We were down at Les Gaillands climbing wall last weekend as well.

Most of the shops are have started their sales now preparing the way for the winter stock. Get some bargains with 30-40% off in most places. Favourites include Peak Performance, Helly Hansen and, following a recent purchase of some shorts, Quiksilver.

Some friends were over last week on an active holiday - mountain-biking, canyoning, rafting, and the rest. They had a throughly excellent week and probably went home a bit fitter - had it not been for (you have to have the whole Chamonix experience.......):

We have been going out lots this week. Goophy's Bar, Chambre 9, Le Privelege and Le Garage nightclub (Saturday nights) are the current venues of preference. Le Garage has been packed the last couple of weekends - last night they had a beach party in there to celebrate the summer!

Goophy's menu and their cocktails have been rather addictive since we reviewed the place a couple of weeks back. And we have been 'doing lunch' on bagels and funky sandwiches at The Grand Central in Rue des Moulins (smoothies), Mojo's in the main square (hummus and feta), and Le Lapin Agile coffee/wine bar near McDonald's (Plat du Jour). I must also admit to being partial to Midnight Express's Chevre sandwich (around 2a.m. ....).

We installed a Wifi internet kit at the Lapin Agile yesterday. They are currently offering free internet access with any purchase - you have to provide the wireless enabled laptop though!

Yesterday evening we went over to Verbier to check out the Verbier Festival and went to watch some of the classical music performances. Verbier is only an hours drive away and the festival is fairly well known so we thought it was about time we saw what it was all about. We came back a little more cultured!

Till the next time, have fun.
