Monkey Brunch Restaurant Review

Tasty good value food in Chamonix Sud

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Pam Williamson, Chamonix Editor Updated

For ladies who lunch, or sporty folk who are starving after a hard morning skiing and snowboarding! Either way, the breakfast & brunch menu at Monkey in Cham Sud has something to suit everyone.

The new retro style decor, yellow padded seats, bold print cushions, old school desk tables and kitsch crockery give this renowned apres bar a more relaxed coffee shop feel during the daylight hours. Perfect for a lazy morning with friends and family, or a quick coffee before you hit the slopes. And it couldn't have been any better for 3 hungry skiers who had just boshed out a few laps up at Brevent!

We considered going for the healthy option of granola, fresh fruit & yoghurt...but if you are going to go out for brunch then it's always good to have something that you wouldn't make for yourself at home. Plus I was in the mood for a bit of a feast...

So I ordered the Veggie English, a full breakfast of 2 vegetarian sausages, 2 eggs, fried mushrooms, baked beans, 2 hash browns, grilled tomato and toast. In the end it was actually too much of a feast for me, but luckily my hungry friends helped me out and it was polished off in no time! Normally my impression of a full English is a bit of a greasy fry up but this actually seemed pretty healthy, with thick cut toasted brown wholegrain bread, delicious plump mushrooms (not fried to a pulp!) and juicy ripe tomatoes. And they certainly didn't scrimp on the portion size, you really do get your moneys worth for €12.50!

My friend and Chamonet High Mountain Reporter, Joel, tried out the Eggs Benedict, a toasted muffin with back bacon, 2 soft poaches eggs, hollandaise sauce and a rocket salad. A really delicious combination with perfectly made hollandaise sauce, but it didn't come swimming in sauce which I think can sometimes ruin a good eggs benedict. So full marks for taste and the nice crispy bacon...but it does seem a little steep perhaps at €13. But then again you do pay for quality here! All meals are prepared fresh in the kitchen from good quality fresh produce and it really shows...you won't find a wilted rocket leaf in any of the salads!

Our other friend, Claire, opted for the eggs and soldiers which come beautifully presented in old mismatched ceramic egg cups. It reminded me of a proper family breakfast. She also asked for a hash brown on the side which finished it off nicely. Teamed with a selection of teas, coffee, green teas and fresh fruit juice, the Monkey breakfast & brunch has something on the menu for everyone. A really good, varied choice depending on how hungry you are, and what your budget is.

Their breakfast & brunch is served everyday between 10:00 and 13:00.

"Free Coffee or Tea with every breakfast! If you’re in a hurry to get your shred up the mountain, don’t worry, we do take out baps & muffins!"

So I've just arranged to meet another friend there on Sunday morning...not sure what dish I'll try then but you can be guaranteed I'll manage to try all of them at some point before the winter is over!
